a dark cloud on a sunny day: a footnote on Toni Morrison’s passing

In our short nation history

a dark cloud, the ancestral figure sits on our shoulder

of all Americans, troubled from the start —

the beginnings of a young, brave nation enslaved in the memory

of social injustices, of tribal talk, of master planners,

so entrenched is the injustice, a weapon evolves from

the long despair of narration, from different different worlds,

with no balanced harnessedĀ action, on a sunny day —

but in guns.

Toni empowered us in awe of mighty words and historical worlds, magnificent

in design and complex in depth. Thank you, Professor Morrison.
