Know your history: WWII story

Life was scrappy from the beginning.

A loaf of homemade bread on the Texas farm was good. And white.

Sharecroppers in the Depression — a family worked hard, dropped out of

school to enlist, and spoke Czech at home.

At just 16, C J D enlisted in the US Navy-Seabees. He knew how to plow,

use a tractor, learned a bulldozer in the tropics in wartime, and send $19/month

home to mother and the younger ones.
